What do I do if Arnica has triggered a seriously upset stomach? Liposuction in 5 days!

I am scheduled for liposuction in 6 days and started taking Arnica Montana. I have terrible diarrhea and feeling nauseous. I don't want to stop it as it has helped me tremendously in my rhinoplasty a couple of years ago and I certainly don't remember that it did this to me back then. Is it normal to develop new reactions to the same drug? And should I continue using it regardless?

Clearly, in this scenario, you should stop taking any medications and see how things work out.  I find it hard to believe that the Arnica is making you sick, but you should stop it anyway.  Lots of people have liposuction without taking it.Incidentally, Arnica is NOT a medication.  It is an herbal supplement.

Hello! Thank you for your question! The recommendations for the use of these homeopathic medications are surgeon preference. I typically suggest the use of Arnica Montana to decrease swelling and bruising. It is an herbal medication that is propagated from the seeds of an herb. I, as well as my patients, have seen some benefit with the treatment in the postoperative period. Although there is little evidence to its effectiveness, I believe there is some benefit, and no harm. I recommend 4-5 tablets under the tongue 4x/day for 3-5 days prior and 5-7 days after the procedure. With your symptoms, I would stop the medication and see how it goes. Unsure if related, but given the correlation of timing, it is reasonable to cease and also ensure that your surgeon knows. Hope that this helps! Best wishes!
