I have a clear, invisalign looking retainer for both my top and bottom teeth. I have been wearing them for almost two years now after having worn braces for two years as well. Today, I pulled out the bottom retainer and was rinsing it when it snapped almost in half. I can still fit the two pieces properly onto my teeth. Will this be sufficient in preventing my teeth from re lapsing or will I need to get a new one? If I need a new one, how soon do I need it? Thank you. P.S. Hi, Dr. Vijay Baghia.

Answer: Broken Retainer Thank you for your inquiry. We're sorry to hear about your broken retainer but are happy to hear how diligent you are in wearing your retainers, as you know the importance of wearing them so that your results from all your hard work with braces will remain into the future. Although your intentions are great about still wearing your broken retainer, it's best you have a new retainer made to prevent shifting into the future. It's a simple process to get a new retainer made and you'll want to have this done sooner rather than later so that you may continue to keep all your teeth in perfect alignment as you have been. We hope this helps and best of luck to you!

Answer: Retainer If your retainer has broken, it is not functioning the way it should. Have your dentist or your orthodontist make you a new one. Your teeth will start shifting again if you don't retain them in place.
