You are correct to be concerned about the risk of fat loss and premature aging with energy devices for your face. The one advantage of being a little bit overweight is that the extra fat can make the face look more youthful. The flip side of that is, weight loss can make your face look older. There are many different energy devices that are supposed to rejuvenate skin, and for the most part they will help restore lost collagen and keep you looking youthful, however, there are some devices that, if used improperly, can cause destruction of the facial fat causing you to look older in the long run. Fractional CO2 laser treatments and micro needling are unlikely to cause damage to the fat. The Fractional CO2 treatments typically do not go deep enough to destroy fat. Fully ablative CO2 laser resurfacing can potentially go deeper than anticipated and cause scarring leading to premature aging. Micro needling with radio frequency and focused ultrasound are treatments that can deliver energy deep into the fat pockets. When too much energy is delivered deep into the face, fat necrosis can occur and in the long run it can make you look older than your age. My advice: Straight micro needling is safe and regular treatments can keep your skin looking youthful. RF micro needling is safe and every effective when used correctly, I prefer the uninsulated needles over the insulated needles that are designed to deliver energy only at the tip (where the fat is). Fractional CO2 or erbium laser treatments are safe and will not age your skin. Unlike a wood floor where too much resurfacing can eventually thin out the surface, your skin is living tissue, and is continuously regenerating new skin. Periodic removal of a thin layer at the surface will help new skin to come in, helping you look younger. The bottom line is, make sure that whoever is doing your treatment knows what they are doing. Energy devices are a great way to stay looking youthful but improper treatment can do the opposite.
