Cochlear Implants and Facelift Surgery?

Question

I have two cochlear implants and have noticed that the work of the surgeons I admired tend to have scars in the same area where my cochlear implant scars are located. Is a cochlear implant a contradiction to Facelift surgery, or stated another way how likely is disruption of my hearing from the surgery? Not in a rush now as most days I pass for 35 and am 48 but time continues to march on...

A facelift incision pattern can be altered to accomodate a cochlear implant. The cochlear implant typically is placed in the mastoid area. I prefer to avoid the implant altogether to avoid any possible disruption or infection but there is not a right or wrong answer here.

I personally have not done a facelift in a patient with a cochlear implant but the incisions can be tailored to accommodate the safety of the implant.

There is no contraindication to having a facelift if you have cochlear implants.  The facelift incisions can be modified to avoid the area if necessary.

	Thank you for the question.  There are a variety of face lift incision patterns that will be able to work with your cochlear implants.  There are also non-face lift type rejuvenation procedures such as fat grafting and skin resurfacing that can also be helpful.

I have performed facelifts in patients with cochlear implants. It is just very important to evaluate where the leads are placed and whether or not you can safely lift the tissues without disrupting the implants. Sometimes the incisions have to be placed in a slightly less than ideal location to accommodate the implants.

No, presence of Cochlear implants is not a contraindication to having a Facelift. As long as appropriate and routine precautions are taken in making the incision and raising the "flaps", there should be no issues and the scars can be easily camouflaged.
