BA 5 weeks ago, rash around incision area (Photo)

I would recommend that you discuss this question with your surgeon as every surgeon has their own respective post op protocol for his/her patients.  Your surgeon is your best resource as he/she is most familiar with your medical history and how you are healing at this time.

The best way to assess and give true advice would be an in-person exam.

Without examining you it’s difficult to give a firm diagnosis but you may have a minor infection or are having a reaction to some buried sutures. I’d suggest booking an appointment with your surgeon to be examined. Hope that helps! 

Redness that appears around a scar can be caused by different conditions.  If you are applying any creams or lotions that can cause irritation, or it may just be from mechanical rubbing of the bra to the area.  If the irritation persists, I would return to your plastic surgeon for a visual assessment.  If you are having any fever or chills, you should return to your doctor ASAP.

It is hard to tell for sure from your photos whether this is just a reaction to, say, adhesives or the Steri-Strip tapes we commonly use (especially since it's only on one side apparently?), or whether it suggests hyperinflammation of your healing scar or other concerns. You need to see your PS for an exam in the office to be assessed properly.

Given the photos and the itching that you are experiencing, this area may represent a topical dermatitis which is a rash precipitated by something that was in contact with the area. It is best that you contact your plastic surgeon and obtain advice as how to treat it and avoid it in the future.Steven Turkeltaub, MD
