Spironolactone is an androgen blocker that is sometimes used off-label to treat women's pattern hair loss and acne. It works by reducing the production of androgens (male hormones) that can contribute to hair loss and acne.
If you stop taking spironolactone, the effects of the medication will eventually wear off and your hair loss may potentially resume. This is because the underlying hormonal imbalance that contributes to hair loss and acne has not been addressed.
However, it's important to note that spironolactone is not the same as minoxidil. Minoxidil is a topical treatment applied directly to the scalp to stimulate hair growth. If you stop using minoxidil, any new hair growth typically falls out within months.
