Will a bit of toe nail fungus delay my Breast Reduction Surgery? (Photo)

Question

I pulled a door open and it caught on both my big toe nails. I discovered later that I was getting toe nail fungus. I used tea tree oil and two OTC products and have kept the nail fungus from spreading to the rest of each toe's nail. Will i need to take the oral pills for months to be rid of the fungus, before I can schedule my Breast Reduction Surgery?

A remote fungal infection would be no contraindication to a breast reduction. Any topical treatment you are receiving can be continued through the operative period.

Toenail fungus alone would not prevent me from doing your surgery. Certainly you should let your plastic surgeon know about it. A podiatrist or dermatologist may help you treat it a little faster than the "months of oral pills" that have been required in the past.

I think it is very unlikely that the toe nail fungus will impact your surgery or put you at significant risk of getting a fungal infection of the breasts, as long as standard prepping, peri-operative, and post-operative measures and hygiene are utilized to disinfect and cleanse the skin before and after surgery.

Very good question. The best way to answer that is to talk to your surgeon. He/She should have the final recommendation. As a hand surgeon as well as a cosmetic/reconstructive plastic surgeon I can tell you that mail fungus (onychomycosis) is a very common ailment. Although it may involve more than one digit, I know if no reports our research to suggest that it increases the risk of infection at a remote surgical site. Those infections are almost always bacterial in nature. There are very good topical medications that you can use before stating a long course of oral medications. You can stop any oral antifungal medication around the time of surgery for your breasts if you need to.  hope this helps. Talk too your Doc and enjoy your reduction results.

Check with your surgeon but in most cases, this is not a problem. However, surgery during serious infections should be postponed.

It is possible to perform a breast reduction at the same time as having a toe nail fungus issue. It is unlikely to be  a problem but always a good idea to talk with your surgeon.

Hello, toe nail fungus should not cause the suspension of the surgical, but your surgeon should check if there is not a bacterial infection too, whuch is very common to have both.
