Can upper eyelid fillers cause blindness?

Hello. I have asymmetrical and slightly hollow upper eyelids and wanted a hyaluronic filler such as restalyne to reduce the hollowness. Is this area around the eye most prone to retinal damage? And does using a blunt cannula rather than a needle work around that region? Thanks

For the hollow upper eyelids an hyaluronic acid base filler is a very good option. If a blunt cannula is used, the chances of embolization are minimal, but there still a very, very low risk for blindness. An expert injector know how to decrease the chances for that, like injecting small amount, moving the cannula during the injection, look for signs of arterial or venous embolization. The risk for blindness is not just for the upper eyelid, also the glabellar region, and infraorbital region are areas with a risk for embolization, that can cause blindness.

Eyelid fillers have been documented to cause blindness in some patients.  It is extremely rare and less likely with cannula injection and by someone experienced.  I suggest going to someone who is an expert.  Best, Dr. Emer.
