Question

When I was 14 years old I fell while roller stating and bit through my bottom lip. I never got stitches my parents just let it heal on it's own. Till this day it healed, but left me with a big scar tissue on my bottom lip with a hard tissue bump that is very noticeable. How can I fix that to make my lips even again. I always try to hide my smile or bit down my bottom lips to make it unnoticeable. I can't even wear lip sticks or lip gross without my bump showing. Please help so I can get this fix.

Thank you for your question. If you had this bump from childhood, it will need to be removed surgically. This maybe a mucous cysts, which is a benign growth. When the tissue is removed, it will be sent to pathology for a diagnosis. The incision is done on the inside of the red lip to help hide any scar. I recommend having consultation with surgeon to discuss your concerns. Best of Luck!

It is common to get thickened scarring inside a lip. I would first try an injection of the scar with steroid (kenalog) along with 5-fluorouracil. If not improved with one to three injections you may need the scar excised (debulked) by making the incision hidden on the inner aspect of the lip (labial mucosa). Many plastic, facial plastic and cosmetic dermatologists may be able to help you with this treatment.

Posted photos are not very revealing of the scarred area of the lower lip. But only a minor lip scar revision surgery would improve...

There can be several options for the treatment of traumatic scars. Injection of steroid and 5-fluorouracil can reduce the thickness and firmness of the scar. Laser treatments such as the pulsed dye laser and ablative or non-ablative fractional laser can improve the appearance as well. These are generally preferred over cutting out the scar surgically as that can leave worse scarring.
