Rhinoplasty aftercare timeline - how long do I need to be careful?

    Interesting question. It takes a full 12 - 18 months to completely finish the healing cycle. At the 6-8 week mark your bones have mostly healed and have near preop strength. the cartilage that was rearranged is also near preop strength. But does this mean you can "be rough" with it?... Remember that the nose continues to change and age your entire life. At some point after surgery, you will not be more susceptible to damage than an unoperated nose... when does this occur?...A good marker is tenderness...if you are tender with manipulation... it is a good idea to back off... hope this helps

Your surgeon is the best to answer your questions.  Every patient heals different so limitations may vary.  I would be careful not to get hit or bumped and limit extreme physical activity for several weeks.  

This is always a point of concern. The splint is removed after 5-7 days. The cartilages can be pretty stable, but if you had an open rhinoplasty much more care is required for at least a couple of months.The nasal bones are typically separated with a chisel and moved. This requires a few months to heal properly. After 4-6 months you could still break your nose, but it would take a degree of trauma essentially equal to anybody getting a broken nose.Hope this helps.All the best,Talmage Raine MD
