Is it normal to have localized pain and a hard time eating two weeks after chin augmentation? (Photo)

Question

I had a chin augmentation 16 days ago and I’m concerned about the pain that I still feel in my chin. On the bottom left side of my chin there is a small bump where the pain is localized when I open my mouth to eat. I can’t see a rash and don’t have any other symptoms. I will be following up with my doctor next week, but in the meantime I’m wondering if I should be concerned about having this kind of localized pain and a hard time eating two weeks post op?

Having localized pain in the first month after a chin augmentation is quite normal.  The swelling caused by the commonly used extended chin implants occurs most often at the lateral ends.  I notice from your picture that there is a slight swelling on the left lateral end where your implant should be ceded.  This is quite common at this stage, and most often clears itself in a couple days up to a couple of weeks.  My experience is that swelling from a chin implant subsides by three weeks.I highly recommend you discuss this swelling with your Board Certified plastic surgeon.  By the way, it appears your chin implant was placed symmetrically.  I am sure whichever Oahu Board Certified plastic surgeon did your surgery that he or she anchored the implant with screws to prevent an asymmetric appearance.

I do not see anything on your photograph to indicate that there is any obvious problem 2 weeks after your chin augmentation.  It is not unusual to still have some pain 2 weeks after the procedure and there sometimes can be some temporary difficulty with eating hard or solid foods.  These issues should be improving over time though.  I would discuss your recovery with your surgeon at your appointment next week and contact your surgeon before that if your symptoms are worsening.

Dear Cburdge, It is not uncommon to have some discomfort post surgery especially when beginning chewing solid foods.
