Removal of facial moles, dermatologist vs plastic surgeon and costs to expect? (photo)

I was referred to a plastic surgeon by a dermatologist to remove 2 facial moles. The derm charged $100 for the office visit. I called local plastic surgeons & none will do consults without charging $100+, with costs estimated at $1500+ for excision of both moles. I would like to meet the surgeon,know the procedure,scar size, recovery time, cost, etc. before walking in the door for removal. Derm or Plastic Surgeon? Are these costs normal for a small city in the South? Shaving vs Excision. Help.

From your photo, it appears that the 2 moles near your mouth are both raised.  If this is the case, they could possibly be shaved off.  Shaving them off should remove them and the skin would be flat, but sometimes some pigment can remain.  If they are excised, they could be removed completely but there would be a small scar.  Most plastic surgeons or facial plastic surgeons would be experienced in removing them by either method.  Some dermatologists perform those procedures and some may not.  It is important to have the procedure done by a doctor with surgical experience however.  The costs will vary by physician. If you have medical insurance, you might check and see if the procedures might be covered.

Hello,You have an intradermal nevus on your vermillion border.  Shaving is quick and easy but the mole will return.An excision is necessary to completely remove but the risk benefit ration may not be great.Insurance typically covers removal of nevi that are changing, growing or causing symptoms.  This can easily be done under local anesthesia in the derms office.Best,Dr. Malouf

As a dermatologist I may be biased, but I find in my area costs are less for mole removal by a dermatologist. In your case I would recommend shave removal because the procedure is quick, in office and recovery is fast. The resulting scar with this type of mole removal is typically hardly visible. An excision would for sure leave a visable scar. A biopsy would also be done if done in my office and insurance should cover that. If un-insured, costs would be approximately $250 plus $100 for the lab fees, $350 total for both moles. No matter who you choose, make sure they are experienced in facial mole removal.
