When can I resume taking Humira for Rheumatoid Arthritis post breast augmentation?

I have Rhematoid Arthritis I am three weeks post breast augmentation. I started my Metheltrexate yesterday. I really want to start Humira as soon as possible because I'm starting to flair up. My Rheumatologist is giving me recommendations that change. I have surgi strips on my incisions.

I have had several patients that have taken Humira and undergone breast augmentation, and we have always recommended they restart the Humira at 6 weeks after breast augmentation and they have all done fine.  I think it is really important though for you to discuss this plan with both your rheumatologist and your plastic surgeon who know and take care of you.  I am happy to share my experience on this. each surgeon probably has a different protocol.  In our clinic you would be referred to one of our specialist colleagues who would then make decisions on your medication protocol that we then follow.  It depends on how bad you arthritis is, how long you can stay off the meds, and how the surgery was done.

Thanks for writing.Typically the human body maximizes its scar production at 6 weeks. The way we heal is through inflammation. Inflammation is white cell that go to an area to fight infection, eat dead tissue stimulate vessel growth etc., when these cells are finished they become scar cell, this is the problem with RA, your white cells are attacking your joints. Humira and the like, slow down your white cells. If you can tolerate it, 6 weeks is a good number, that is why my colleagues here are suggesting it. The attempt is to ensure you breast augmentation heals well. IMPORTANT: Check with your plastic surgeon and your rheumatologist to be sure they are happy with your healing and see when they want you to start you meds. Good Luck.Stephen M.
