Saline usage post rhinoplasty - Are there different options?

Considering a rhinoplasty this year. I understand that surgeons recommend using saline post op. My issue is when I use a saline I become very sneezy and nose becomes itchy on tthe inside (almost allergy type feeling). What can I do to minimize discomfort caused by saline post op? Are there specific types of saline that are better?

It is very important to use saline spray (many people use Ocean Spray) after rhinoplasty. The inside of the nose has to heal, and if it doesn't stay moist, it will take longer to heal. Be sure to discuss your concerns with your surgeon.

I recommend the use of saline post operatively, as it helps gently keep the nose clean. The cleaner it is on the inside, the better it heals. You will not be able to blow your nose for at least 1 -2 weeks after surgery so the saline helps get the crusts out. I do recommend a sinus rinse with moderate yet gentle steady flow, but if you are unable to tolerate this, there are pre-made saline cans with a push nozzle which can provide an even more gentle rinse. I always tell my patients not to over do it and to do what they can manage and what feels comfortable. Hope this helps!

Saline spray after rhinoplasty: The only purpose of saline spray after rhinoplasty is to help clean the inside of the nose. If you do not wish to use Saline you can try simply blowing your nose and using a Q-tip with a little hydrogen peroxide. I don’t understand why Saline irritates your nose. Most of our body weight consists of Saline.

Saline is not necessary, plain water will help wash out your nose just fine. When using either you will need to be mindful of sutures inside the nose and take caution not to disrupt them while you are healing.
