Generally speaking, there are three variables that determine the outcome of breast augmentation surgery. The first is the patient’s candidacy for the procedure. The second is the choice of implants in regards to size shape, and type. The third variable is the surgeons ability to place the implants and the correct anatomic location. to maximize quality outcome and minimize the chance of problems or disappointment. I suggest focusing your efforts on finding the best provider in your community. I suggest patients do that by having multiple in person consultations. With experienced plastic surgeons, who seem to have a strong track record for breast surgery. During each consultation, ask each provider to open up their portfolio and show you their entire collection of before, and after pictures of previous patients, who had similar body characteristics to your own. Each plastic surgeon will have their own way of guiding patients through the implants selection process. There’s no correct number of consultations needed to find the best provider. The more consultations you scheduled the more likely are to find the better provider for your needs. Being board-certified in plastic surgery with years of experience does not mean somebody has mastered any single procedure. Finding the right plastic surgeon may be challenging and is usually more difficult than most people realize. Start the process by scheduling a few consultations in your community. I generally recommend people avoid virtual consultations when possible. I also recommend patients avoid traveling long distances for elective surgical procedures if possible. Selecting the right implants is an important part of the process. Some providers are better at this than others. When slow down and schedule a few more consultations. No one asked to have cosmetic surgery. Find the right provider and most things fall into place. When problems arise or patients have concerns after this procedure usually related to one of the above three variables. Each of them are probably equally as important. There isn’t much patience can do regarding the wrong candidacy. What patients do have control over is provider selection. Choosing the right plastic surgeon is more important than most people realize. best, Mats Hagstrom, MD
