Was advised to massage my scalp on the 10th day post op after FUE transplant to help remove scabs? Are my grafts falling out?

Question

I started to massage the area to remove the scabs very gently and hairs kept falling out that where lodged into the scabs. Have I lost grafts completely or have I just lost the hair that was in the scab and the graft is lodged in my head? Please help as I feel it's been a waste of time if I've massaged all the grafts out!?

We recommend our patients to start massage after 1 week on the transplanted area . Only with fingertips. Scratching is not allowed. Massage will not damage the transplanted grafts. The hair which are falling out are the "old" ones. So do not worry.

It is best to ask your surgeon about post operative care as each doctor has their unique regimen.   After 10 days it would be very difficult to dislodge grafts.

Your doctor should have mentioned that this would happen- transplanted grafts usually fall out between a week and two months following a transplant surgery. As long as you aren't pulling hard and they are coming out more or less on their own and there's no sign of trauma such as blood, it's incredibly unlikely you've down any damage to your grafts. They should all start growing back in the next several months!

An FUE is treated just like a regular hair transplant with regard to the recipient area, but the donor area has open wounds which require daily washing with soap and water. Within 3 days of surgery, you can resume full activities, heavy exercises if you wish. The recipient area requires daily washes as well to keep the recipient area free of crusts. I generally recommend the use of a sponge and supply my patient with a surgical sponge to fill with soapy water and press on the recipient area daily. By repeating this daily, all crusts can be washed off without any fear of losing grafts. IF any crust are present, use a Q tip and dip it into soapy water, and roll it on the crusts and that will lift them off without dislodging them, but never rub them, just roll the Q tip on the recipient crust. I like to see no evidence of any crusting in the recipient area and the crusts from the donor area gone in 7-10 days with daily washing,.
