Minoxidil (5%) is an FDA approved treatment for androgenetic alopecia which I assume is what you have. Some folks see shedding when they start Minoxidil, and also see shedding when they stop. Even with your early shedding, you need to take it for a minimum of 4 months before discontinuing to ascertain for sure if it is not working. Be aware that even though it is applied topically to your scalp, it can have systemic effects (dizziness, low BP, arrhythmias). It may work for many months and then stop working.  If it is working, you will be taking it forever. Your alternative is LLLT.  While a quality laser unit is expensive, over the long run it is the least expensive option. Finally, if neither of these approaches work, you should consider PRP.

note that you were on minoxidil 5% and then you stopped it then after a month
you noticed hair loss at an increased rate. 
Medications such and minoxidil or the prescription drug finasteride will
help you to keep the hair you have but, once you stop it your body will realize
it and the hair loss will resume.  In
other words, minoxidil only works during the time you apply it.
