What is too much bleeding for a (post-op four days) nipple graft? (Photo)

Question

Last night was the first time i have had a decent sleep but I woke up this morning and had wet blood on my arm (from my chest). Needless to say I freaked and took my vest off to look and there was quite a bit of blood in and around my right nipple. We called the surgeon and they said bleeding is fine as long as it isnt constant and excessive. Within the hour it had stopped. But I have noticed it is starting to seep through my vest again. Should i call again? My post op appointment is Thursday.

I would recommend going to see your surgeon as this much bleeding may potentially interfere with proper take of the nipple graft. More than likely it's a normal amount of oozing, but the added amount of moisture under your dressings form the bleeding may be of concern as well.

It is very common to have some bleeding from around the edges of the nipple graft or the bolster, which sits on top of the graft. Most of the time. This causes unnecessary distress for the patient. The clear plastic bandage allows you to see this small amount of blood, oftentimes exaggerating exactly how much bloodThere is there, and setting up needless worry. Hopefully by the time you read this answer, the situation will be resolved.

It is a little tough to tell from you photo.  Blood under those clear dressings tends to always look worse than it is.  Still, if there is any asymmetry between the sides after the surgery, it is always best to have it looked at.  Hope this helps.

Thank you for your question. You should get into see your surgeon as soon as possible. If your have severe asymmetry, bruising and bleeding you most likely have a hematoma. Good luck.
