Thank you for your question regarding fat embolism during liposuction vs. fat embolism during a BBL. You must realize these are entirely different types of procedures. Fat is removed under negative pressure and permanently eliminated from the body during liposuction. During a BBL procedure, fat is removed, but then it is reinjected. The highest incidents of fat emboli are when fat is injected into the muscle layer of the buttocks. This used to be commonly performed; however, once more research, the practice of injecting fat into the gluteus Maximus muscle was condemned. Plastic surgeons do not inject fat into the gluteus maximus muscle anymore. By not injecting fat into the muscle, the risk of fat embolism has significantly dropped. Therefore the risk of fat embolism is almost zero. The risk of fat embolism during routine liposuction is also extremely low. Please seek an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon when contemplating Sincerely, Dr. Katzen.
