The vast majority of infections can be treated with specific antibiotics based on culture results and resolve without requiring hospitalization or surgery. A minority of surgical infections require a return to the operating room for removal of dead, infected tissue and copious irrigation of the wound to remove a large bacterial load and better allow the body to resolve the infection. Your surgeon should be the one directing your care. Discsuss your options with him. 

The indication for hospitalization for an infection depends more on the severity of the infection than the type of infection. Small, localized infections can be treated safely and effectively with local wound care and appropriate oral antibiotics. Larger infections or systemic infections may require hospitalization, wound irrigation and debridements, or intravenous antibiotics. The decision to hospitalize a patient is based on the clinical examination and interpretation of all the data by your surgeon, sometimes in coordination with an infectious disease doctor. No one on a question and answer website is going to tell you whether you need to be hospitalized. This is a question you need to consult your surgeon about.
