Are antihistamines safe to use after microneedling?

Thank you for asking a great question. Microneedling causes micro injury to the tissue, wound healing process  is accomplished through different phases: such as hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. Histamine H1 blockers or mast cell stabilizers  are anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative agents shown to inhibit the deposition of collagen and the synthesis of collagen in fibroblasts. The normal interaction between the mast cell and fibroblast promotes tissue remodeling with the induction of histamine mediated ATP, leucotrines and growth factors.This is a complex topic since microneedling is performed for both normal skin and pathological skin conditions such as keloids and scars. In general the antihistamines are not routinely prescribed before or after the microneedling unless there is an allergic reaction.Best WishesDr. Shanthala

Hi Maria,Great question and probably worth studying. In my professional opinion antihistamines should not affect your results from microneedling.  In fact, we often prescribe antihistamines for patients undergoing Kybella treatment which help minimize swelling and yet allow for the reaction necessary to dissolve the fat tissue in the submental area. I do not believe there is a need to take an antihistamine after microneedling treatment and do not recommend it to my patients. Good skin care post treatment is all you will need.
