Will my insurance (United Healthcare) cover keloid removals on my earlobes? If so, what kind of doctor should I need to visit?

I have United Healthcare as my insurance provider, I live in Houston Texas and well I have been suffering from Keloids on the back of both of my earlobes for about 2-3 years now? would anyone know if my insurance covers any removals and if so who should I see thats pretty good at this practice in Texas. Thank you for your time.

Insurance will not cover cosmetic removal of keloids.  I suggest speaking to a cosmetic dermatologist or plastic surgeon with experience.  Best, Dr. Emer.

Hello Ant1418866,It is always difficult to say whether insurance will cover anything.  When it comes to keloid scars, there are times when they cover treatments and times when they deny them.  A lot of it depends on the location and symptoms you are having.  If removal is for cosmetic purposes only then I would not count on them covering it. If you are having more of the physical symptoms such as pain, itching, drainage, some functional impairment because of their size, etc., then you have a better chance that it will be covered.  I would recommend you consult with a facial plastic surgeon to discuss your options as there are many treatment options available for keloids.I hope this helps and good luck.
