I am 2 days post op for breast augmentation. Ever since my surgery, I can almost taste my bad breath.

Question

I had my husband check for me, and he confirmed that my breath smelled. I am taking hydrocodon acetaminophen, and wondering if that could cause it? I'm drinking tons of water.

Also since ones body is healing and thereby using more calories than taking in, especially protein, your body's metabolism can be in a negative protein balance. This is normal, and one can be in a ketotic state. When you wake up after a night's sleep we all are in this. This too can be smelled on one's breath.

Hello! Thanks for your question. First off, very unlikely that it is the result of anything bad happening. As for what's causing it... good question. Typically pain medications don't cause bad breath. Most commonly, bad breath is caused by food particles trapped in the oral cavity or pharynx. If you haven't tried the obvious things like flossing, listerine, etc., I would start there. I would suspect that this is something that will resolve over a short period of time.
