I have enlarged turbinates, considering getting nasal surgery coblation as an option. I've read that people have gotten empty nose syndrome, just wondering how likely this is to happen.
Answer: What is the chance of developing empty nose syndrome from coblation of the nasal turbinates? Hello johnny2211,Thanks for your question.Coblation technology is incredibly safe in the hands of a skilled surgeon. The incidence of empty nose syndrome is minimal.Heavy cautery of the turbinates or aggressive excision of turbinates is more associated with the development of empty nose syndrome. My recommendation is to go over this with your surgeon to feel comfortable with your decision.Good luck,Dr. Shah

Answer: Empty nose syndrome: Information Dear Ms. Johnny2211,Thank you for your story and questions. Nothing substitutes for a personal evaluation, a review of your medical history/medications and a face to face discussion of your options.Unfortunately without a photos or examination I can advise you in general terms, however I hope you will find them helpful. The likely hood of having this complication is rare. Please ask your chosen Plastic Surgeon his/her experience and more importantly how they will deal with this complication if it occurs.I trust that you have chosen a Plastic Surgeons who is experienced and Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Answer: What is the chance of developing empty nose syndrome from coblation of the nasal turbinates? Hello Johnny2211,When done properly the chance of developing empty nose syndrome after any turbinate procedure is quite low. The risk of that depends on whether any other procedures are being done, the size of your turbinates, and your surgeon. I would recommend you consult with a facial plastic surgeon or an otolaryngologist (ENT) as these would have the most experience with treating breathing difficulties as a result of internal nasal problems such as enlarged turbinates. I hope this helps and good luck.
