How do I treat Accutane burns?

Accutane is a go-to medication for patients with recalcitrant cystic acne. It can reduce pore size and also reduce sebum production in your skin, making it less oily; and in turn, dryer. Accutane can be used to control acne, but patients receiving the medication should be carefully monitored. In terms of skincare, always wear an appropriate sunscreen and reduce direct sun exposure. In my patients, I recommend a good ceramide moisturizer such as Elevase whenever they are on Accutane. This will keep the skin hydrated and reduce the oiliness of the skin that is associated with oil-based moisturizers.

It’s common to be especially sensitive to the sun when taking isotretinoin (Accutane). Be sure to use sunscreen with an SPF 50 any time you are outside or even riding in a car, as UVA light can penetrate through glass. I would suggest wearing long sleeves, pants, and hats whenever possible, as this will provide even better protection than sunscreen alone.
For the burns themselves, take cool showers and drink plenty of water to keep your skin well hydrated. Use a moisturizer like cetaphil or Cerave twice daily. Alternatively, lotions with aloe vera or soy can be soothing to the skin. Hydrocortisone cream can also be used if irritation is severe, but I would avoid anything with lidocaine or benzocaine.
