Question

I am 57 with a history of multiple autoimmune illnesses. I was on high doses of steroids for years and my weight ballooned up by 60 pounds. I recently lost 45 pounds but now my jowls are so prominent, and my lips are permanently turn down at the corners so people think I’m mad or sad. Will having auto immune illnesses prevent me from having a procedure to help with the jowls? I also have Waldenström’s non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, but require no treatment at this time.

Hello; Your cheeks have fallen down; jowls have become clear; your Marionette line has deepened; skin sagging has begun in your neck and jowl areas and your platysmal bands have become evident. This situation; cannot be corrected by any technique; other than surgical intervention. Neck lift and face lift; need to be done. However, if you use high doses of steroids, it will not be a surprise; if you experience with recovery problems; which appear after this type of surgery. Since, steroids delay for healing in wounds and cause for the stitching line to become in a separate position. Therefore, it is not possible to realize this type of surgery while using steroids. If you stop for using steroids, you may have surgery as well.

Some plastic surgeons may be apprehensive to doing cosmetic surgery considering your medical history.
Chronic use of steroids is not ideal when it comes to doing cosmetic surgery.
I suggest you first talk to your internist to make sure they feel comfortable with the idea of you considering cosmetic surgery. You will for sure require medical clearance from those doctors if any plastic surgeon is going to consider taking on your case.
