Hi, I am very interested in FUE for my hairline. I also have vitiligo, this means whenever I cut myself etc vitiligo starts. Has any doctors had any exp with FUE and vitiligo?

I had a patient with Vitiligo on his hair line.  He had a hair transplant to cover it by slightly lowering the hair line.  Hair transplant can work.  But you need an exam to make sure it is a possibility in you particular case.FUE is just a method of harvesting hairs.  It is a great surgery but it doesn't mean it may be the right method for you. FUE still will leave a scar. (dots)

Hair transplants can be used to treat vitiligo. However, they can also make it worse. This is a good reason to do it in small steps at a tiem.

hi Maximus77There is a risk of a vitiligo flare with a hair transplant. The amount of risk depends a bit on the subtype you have (fingers and lips vs body) and how stable it has been in recent months. Nevertheless the risk is there but small. Interestingly, hair transplant grafts carry skin pigment producing cells (melanocyte stem cells) and are in fact sometimes used as a somewhat experimental technique for treating vitiligo. in other words, if you do have   pigmented patches in the frontal area, the transplant could actually help pigment it. I'd recommend you discuss these issues with your dermatologist and hair transplant surgeon. There are some "unknowns" here but overall the risk is low for a flare.

This is a skin disease that is common in my own family so I understand it from a patient point of view. Hair and vitiligo are unrelated. You can go forward with a hair transplant (FUE) and if you get vitiligo in the wounds, I guess you can treat it with Scalp Micropigmentation, something we are presently trying with some patients with this disease.
