Wouldn't dermabrasion be more effective as it is removing the top layer of skin? Do some lasers also remove the top layer of the skin in the same way as dermabrasion?

Answer: Dermabrasion is a mild procedure. Laser resurfacing is a better option for severe discoloration and scarring
I am so sorry for this, unfortunately when you self treat, no matter what condition, either skin problem or hair removal or any other medical condition, you end up spending more than saving money.
I dont know the source of your sand paper but if it is not a medical grade, it may have ingredients...
