Septo-rhinoplasty packing not being removed until Day 7... is this normal as it is unbearably uncomfortable?

It is not necessary to have tampons inside the nostrils after septo/rhinoplasty surgery. The silicone sheets can help the healing by preventing adhesions and scar tissue. If you are in discomfort and they are cutting into your nostrils, you should be seen by your surgeon. If they are properly placed, it is quite normal to keep them in place for a week.

Silicone sheaths (also called internal splints) serve the function to avoid any hematoma formation inside your septum by pushing your mucosa gently against your septal cartilage. In many cases, our septum is either deviated, or has spurs that need to be straightened in order to improve nasal breathing. We also use parts of the septal cartilage (especially in primary rhinoplasties) as grafting material. Depending on the amount of septal work that was required (in order to harvest septal cartilage for grafting or to straighten your septum) the internal splints need to stay in your nose for bit longer. 7 days is an average time span that many surgeons suggest.
