I have capsular contracture. Do I have to have my implants removed?

Capsular contracture the breast is certainly unwanted but is not a medical issue. There are several avenues of treatment including removing the capsule in replacing the breast implants. Your surgeon can discuss these with you but removal of the implants is not necessary for your health.

If the contraction is minimal, not causing you pain, does not distort the implant or breast...then I would say that you don't have to do anything but to keep an eye on the breast for any changes, continue normal cancer surveillance and regular exams. Many people have mild forms of capsular contracture that does not require aggressive treatment if its not bothering them. 

Hi Christine,The only effective treatment for capsular contracture is to remove the capsule surgically. It is a relatively minor procedure with very little downtime and you can keep the implant in place. Best,Dr. K

Having a capsular contracture fixed, does require having another surgery. It is very quick and easy and your implant will be removed during surgery in order to remove the capsule, but them reinserted during the same surgery. So yes, you can keep your implants. Your surgeon should be able to show you some breast massage techniques to prevent any other further issues.
