Tummy Tuck and Bleeding Disorder?

Question

I have type 1 Von Willebrands bleeding disorder. I would like to have a tummy tuck with lipo. I would like to know if having Von Willebrands increases my risk to the point where I would not be a candidate for the surgery. I have had 3 C-sections and a partial hysterectomy. I was premedicated with DDAVP and IV Benadryl (I am allergic to DDAVP) before past surgery and have had little to no bleeding. Thoughts? 46 yrs old, 5ft, 143lbs

As long as your hematologist clears you, and you don’t have other medical issues, a tummy tuck should be possible.

Usually, as you’ve had previously, DDAVP infusion before, this would be given prior. At times, Amicar may also be given.

In my experience, we have performed tummy tucks with liposuction In similar situations with hematology clearance, medications, instructions. Stress early walking, hydration, etc to avoid DVT blood clots.

An exam and consultation with a plastic surgeon is recommended to confirm you are a candidate as well as discuss your options and expectations.

You need to have a hematologist treat you specifically for the bleeding disorder. It’s possible but there aren’t going to be a lot of plastic surgeons willing to take the risk

You will need medical clearance and advice from a hematologist before proceeding with surgery. The tummy tuck is different than your previous surgeries since there is more risk of bleeding.  Liposuction only has less risk than the previous surgeries.

Speak with your hematologist about your interest in a tummy tuck.  If given clearance you can then schedule a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon.  Not all surgeons may be comfortable performing the surgery and you may have extra precautions put in place for safety.

Each plastic surgeon will make their own decision regarding who is a candidate for surgery and who is not.
If a plastic surgeon considers doing your procedure, they will most likely insist on getting medical clearance from a hematologist.
Even with clearance some plastic surgeons may prefer not to do the procedure.
You’ll have to have consultations and ask each provider.
 it wouldn’t hurt to get a quality assessment to make sure you’re a good candidate for the procedure in the first place.
