I got my lip injections 12 hours ago, it was my very first time. Is this swelling normal? (Photo)

Hello and thank you for your question. From the pictures, it looks like normal post injection swelling. Swelling is a common minor adverse event that can occur after the injection of dermal fillers (or anytime a needle is placed into the skin) and it can be asymmetrical. Fortunately, this is temporary and there are ways to help minimize the effects. It is still early after injection, so a few days of icing and intermittent massage may solve the problem.
It can take up to 2 weeks for the adverse events to resolve and for your fillers to be settled into your lip tissue. If you’re unhappy with your results or the lumps do not resolve, the filler can be reversed with hyaluronidase.

Yes, this can be typical after lip filler. I would wait a full 2 weeks before judging the results. If it is after the two week wait, you can have the filler reversed with hyaluronidase.

Lips always swell a lot, as they are very sensitive and vascular structures. Regardless of whether you inject with a needle or a canula (my preferred method), the lips will swell for the first 24-48 hours. The lips will never wind up bigger than they were at the end of the injection, as filler doesn't grow. Any increase you see is due to swelling. It can take 2 full weeks for lip filler to settle. I suggest you ice the lips a lot for the first 1-2 days. If sever swelling occurs, then consider taking an oral steroid or using steroid cream.

Tookie.  It is quite normal to experience symptoms similar to the ones you are describing after lip injections for augmentation. However, if pain persists after one more day, I would contact your physician injector. Best of luck.

Dear Tookie95,dermal fillers have significant swelling post injection. I would follow up with you plastic surgeon but typically I tell all my patients to wait a full two weeks.  Generally at 2 weeks they are happy and glad they didn't dissolve.  Dissolving is unpredictable as well.Daniel Barrett, MD

Hello and thank you for your question and photo.  Your lips look fantastic and the swelling is normal.  We typically recommend gel ice packs up to 72 hours for swelling if it occurs.  The swelling will subside quickly.  If you have any concerns, I would recommend reaching out to your board certified injector, they should be happy to consult with you regarding any concerns you may have.  I hope this information helps and best of luck to you!

Thank you for your question. It is common to have some swelling after fillers for lip augmentation which can take up to 2 weeks to resolve. You can apply cold compresses to the area to help reduce swelling and bruising. It is also advisable to avoid any NSAID’s before and after treatment as they tend to thin the blood and increase the risk of bruising and swelling. Thank you for your question and for sharing your photograph.  Congratulations on your lip augmentation procedure!  Swelling is normal after treatment with filler, especially when the lips are injected.  Swelling can often cause the appearance of asymmetry or unwanted fullness.  I recommend that my patients apply ice for up to 48 hours after the procedure.  Please keep in mind that it will take 2 weeks to allow normal postprocedure swelling to fully resolve and to see your final result.  If you continue to have concerns, please be sure to see your injector for an in-person reevaluation in order to determine the best course of action.  Hope this helps and best wishes!
