Can I do IPL sessions while on spironolactone?

Hi ! I suffer from an idiopathic hirsutism and I am on spironolactone 100mg/day. I was offered an IPL machine (philips). I would love to get rid of my hair, but is it safe with this medication ? Is it okay if I stop taking spiro for a week everytime I have an IPL session ? Thank you so much !!

The possibility of a photosensitive reaction with Spironolactone is approximately  .12%. (very low) I would recommend doing a test in a non visible area first. Should this be negative, the chances are that you will not react. Starting and stopping spironolactone has risks and should be avoided if possible.

Thank you for your question Frimoussee. I understand your concern. An IPL photofacial is an
outstanding treatment for facial rejuvenation. It works by using bright light
to target and destroy pigment and redness in the skin. It is difficult to make an assessment without a
formal exam in the office where I can directly view the skin. However, I hope
the information provided here is useful.Some drugs are photosensitizing, meaning that they make the skin more sensitive to light. Such medications should be discontinued prior to an IPL photofacial treatment. Spironolactone is not such a medication. I do not have my patients discontinue spironolactone before a treatment.Please consult with a doctor for specific
