I got lip fillers 4 months ago and after being sick I got a bump/swollen spot on my top lip (Photo)

Question

I was very sick and my lips were swollen for 3 days and as soon as they went down the bump stayed. It is painful and irritable to touch. I contacted the lady who did my lip filler and her doctor and they prescribed antibiotics and I’ve been taking for four days and the irritated spot is still here.

Thank you for sharing your question and I am sorry to hear of your lip difficulties.  If you have seen little improvement, I would recommend having them dissolve your filler and continue with the antibiotics until your symptoms have fully resolved.  Best wishes.

Inflammatory nodules can form days to months after filler injections.  The illness you had may have stimulated an immune response in the lip.  See your doctor.  Usually best to dissolve the filler.  If you still have a nodule, then will need to use some steroid injections or by mouth to decrease any residual inflammation.

This could be a granuloma, an immune response to the filler. Its more common to have this happen when you are sick and your immune system is revved up. I would recommend returning to your injector for an in person evaluation. Oral or injected steroids can help, but the filler may need to be dissolved if the bump doesnt go away.

Thank you for your question, I agree with the other physicians.  This inflammatory response to fillers, particularly some of the newer products can show up months after the initial injection and patients generally share your story- that they had an illness or even a tooth cleaning.  I would also recommend that you return to see your injector- our general protocol is to start with antibiotics +/- steroids depending on severity and also try hyaluronidase to dissolve the filler.
