I want to get a Brazilian butt lift but my friend had one and got an infection. She was in the hospital for a few days. What are the cause of infections from bbl(fat transfer) and what can someone do to prevent them from occurring ? Is it related to the technique or hygiene ?
Answer: BBL Thank you for your question.Infection is a risk with any surgical procedure. The procedure should be done in a sterile environment to help decrease the risk of exposure to bacteria. My patients receive a dose of antibiotics prior to the procedure and also stay on them for a week after as prevention. Hygiene is also a very important factor. You need to make sure you are keeping the areas clean and dry daily while you are healing.

Answer: BBL Infection risk The risk of infection secondary to BBL is not significant and on par with most other surgical procedures. Infection can be avoided by standard perioperative prophylactic antibiotics and sterile technique. As always, discuss your concerns with a board certified plastic surgeon (ABPS).

Answer: BBL and Infections Hello and thank you for your question. Based on scientific literature, the best way to prevent surgical site infections is to use nasal mupirocin and chlorhexidine baths for 5 days prior to surgery. Nasal mupirocin can be prescribed by your primary care doctor or plastic surgeon prior to the operation. The chlorhexidine can be purchased at a pharmacy (over the counter) and is otherwise known as Hibiclens. I always prescribe patients a 10 day course of antibiotics after a Brazilian butt lift as well. This is taking into account any antibiotic allergies they may have. I use sterile techniques when transferring the fat to the buttock as well as during the liposuction portion of the operation. All the best! Alex Zuriarrain, MD, Plastic Surgery

Answer: Infections after BBL Perioperative antibiotics have become a standard. There is less agreement about antibiotics for a period of time after surgery, though I still provide them for about a week. Surgeon experience and record are important. The risk of infection is extremely low. Kenneth Hughes, MD, Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA

Answer: BBL Thank you for your post. To minimize your risk for infection it is crucial for you to closely follow any pre-operative and post-operative care instructions that your operating surgeon gives you; such as taking antibiotics as directed and following the care instructions closely. If any infection does seem to be developing, contact your surgeon right away. It's best to have a thorough in person consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon in your area to discuss all of your treatment options.
