19, soon to be 20. Too young for a boob job?

Question

Hi, I’m a 19-year-old female, soon to be 20. Since puberty, my bra size has been 34B. There is nothing physically “wrong” with my breasts, but I am dissatisfied with this size as it makes me feel flat/boyish. My question is, am I too young for a boob job? Is there a chance that my chest would randomly continue developing around, say, 23? I have heard from other women that they’ve experienced a sort of second puberty in their early 20s. If relevant, I am 5’1” & 98 lbs. Thanks in advance!

This fact will lower the chance that you might still be developing. I recommend an in person consultation with a plastic surgeon to discuss your goals and be measured. After I measure and discuss goals with my patients, we then look at pictures of women (my patients) with similar measurements with different size and style breast implants, if interested. They also get to see what they would look like when the breasts have fully dropped and fluffed and in clothes. You get to see actual results and the surgeon's experience and not a virtual idea of what can be achieved. In general, breast development typically occurs during puberty and can continue into the early 20s. It is possible that your breasts may continue to develop, but it's difficult to predict how much or if it will be enough to change your satisfaction with your breast size.

Regarding age for breast augmentation, there is no set age limit, but it is generally recommended to wait until breast development has fully completed, which is usually around age 18. If you are 18 years of age and are able to provide consent for your own procedure, you can proceed with the surgery. There should not be many changes to your breasts at your age unless you have significant changes in weight, pregnancy, start birth control or any other hormonal changes.

Thank you for this question. Silicone implants are only FDA approved fo cosmetic use in patients aged 22 yo or greater, or any age for reconstruction. Saline implants are FDA approved for cosmetic use in patients aged 18 or greater. If your body is still significantly changing you should wait for a breast augmentation. I recommend you see a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in breast surgery and breast augmentations.

Typically for most women breast development is occurs during puberty and stops by age 18, however some women do experience changes after this. Most often this is in response to changes in body weight and composition which can also change during the late teens and early 20s. However the breasts do undergo significant changes during pregnancy and following pregnancy as well as menopause. The decision to undergo breast augmentation is a personal one and while I can certainly increase your breast size, the timing of it will depend on what is most important to you. The FDA recommends that patients be 22 years or older for silicone gel implants and 18 years or older for saline implants which is another factor to consider. I'd recommend consulting with a plastic surgeon when you feel ready.

most BA patients are older than 19-20, but your age is not a contraindication for surgery. If you decide to get a surgery, your options will include fat transfer or saline implants.
