I am currently researching eyelid surgery to make my eyelids more symmetrical. I also would like my eyes to appear larger and more prominent on my face. Would an epicanthoplasty be appropriate in my case to help achieve that in addition to double eyelid surgery? Also I heard with epicanthoplasties there's more risk for scarring. Are there any long term adverse effects associated with the procedure such as sagging or losing shape, etc?

Answer: Epicanthoplasty for larger eyes Mahalo for your photo. Balancing your horizontal eye fissures can be done with epicanthal fold release. One rule of thumb is to have the eye fissure widths equal the distance between the medial canthi. So, you would be an excellent candidate for epicanthoplasties. Discussion should also address your preferences on double fold blepharoplasties to increase the apparent vertical height of your eye dimensions. We have been offering a stitch technique which does not result in an incision scar. Do consider consulting board certified plastic surgeons with lots of experience with Asian eyelids.

Answer: Epicanthoplasty An epicanthoplasty will get rid of the fold that hangs over the inner eye corner. That will help open up the eye somewhat. There is some risk of adverse scarring with this procedure but generally it heals well without significant scarring. An epicanthoplasty is often combined with double eyelid surgery for an overall eye shape change.

Answer: Would an epicanthoplasty open up my eye appearance as well as having a double eyelid blepharoplasty? the epicanthoplasty should lengthen the appearance of the skin fold in scar length, but should encourage less of a hooded appearance to the inner side of the eyelid structure. This should give a more open appearance in general, focusing more on the appearance of the eye. The scar created by the procedure will be broken up in its tendency to contract, decreasing the tendency for a tightened, contracting scarTalk to a highly qualified Plastic Surgeon in your area, and ask all of your questions.Good luck to you!Frank Rieger M.D. Tampa Plastic Surgeon
