Will a deviated septum get in the way of a Rhinoplasty? (photos)

Question

Hello my nose closes if I breath in with any force around where it joins my cheeks. I think I may have a bit of a deviated septum. Would this be a barrier to a rhinoplasty? Should I consult a NHS doctor is there any help? Miserable with migraines and fatigue probably from this. Only just discovered this isn’t a Normal thing! Is this normal??

Hello and thank you for your question. Breathing problems, particularly those stemming from a deviated septum, can absolutely be addressed during your rhinoplasty procedure. Before moving forward with treatment, you’ll need a comprehensive endonasal exam to determine whether a combined septoplasty and rhinoplasty is right for you. I recommend scheduling a consultation with a board-certified facial plastic surgeon who has experience in performing both procedures.

You are correct.Rhinoplasty can induce or worsen nasal obstruction.
Your deviated septum needs to be straightened with a Septoplasty (not an SMR - Submucosal Resection), at the same time as your Rhinoplasty.
You also are eliciting "nasal valving" (when you sniff in your nostrils collapse), and this needs to be addressed too, but it can make the nose a bit wider, so choose an experienced surgeon for your operation.(In general, Plastic and ENT surgeons use very similar techniques on nasal shape, but dealing with nasal obstruction is usually handled better by ENT surgeons, whose main nasal work is unblocking noses, clearing sinuses, and doing Rhinoplasties.)

Hi and welcome to our forum!
It is a normal phenomenon for the nostrils to narrow during deep nasal inspiration as suction pulls the lax nostril skin and soft tissue against the nasal septum. I am not quite sure how hard you are sniffing.
A deviated (or displaced) septum from midline, encroaching upon the nasal airway, would obstruct the airway even during relatively shallow respiration. Endonasal examination is required to determine the source of obstructed nasal breathing. If there is an obstructed nasal airway, a septoplasty can be incorporated into the rhinoplasty (septo-rhinoplasty) without interference.
Visit a board certified plastic or nasal surgeon for evaluation and discussion.
