Question

Hi, I am 31 years old and both of my pregnancies have caused bulging veins on my lower left leg. I have only found two places near me that treat this but they wanted to charge me for a consultation and wouldn’t give me any of a price range. I was hoping somebody could give me an idea or offer a free consultation because I just want tofor a consultation, if the treatment is thousands as that is not viable for me right now. I Thankyou

Many thanks for your question - varicose vein development and indeed progression can relate to pregnancy. Unfortunately, I would agree with the advice that you have been given whereby a clinical consultation is mandatory for your safety and I would not recommend proceeding to treatment without a venous duplex scan of your legs - at "Professor Mark O'Donnell Varicose Veins and Vascular Surgery Clinic Belfast - Northern Ireland - Ireland", your initial consultation includes a venous duplex scan where results are provided immediately in support of treatment recommendations at the same clinic appointment. It is also important to realise that some vein treatments cannot be performed such as sclerotherapy if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy (thereby a test is required prior to treatment). I also prefer to wait 9-12 months after baby delivery before treating veins at my clinic. Breast Feeding is also a contraindication to sclerotherapy which is the most likely treatment required in your case. However, if a venous duplex scan confirmed more severe varicose veins higher up in your legs you may required additional treatment modalities such as radiofrequency ablation.
