Did Botox cause eye damage?

Question

Ive had botox 3 times in total. This time, in March, the injector injected a tiny amount under my eye (near tear duct I believe), which resulted in huge eye bags. In total, this took 5/6 month to wear off. It was a hideous journey. When I look down, there is still a bag line under 1 eye. Any ideas why this is still there? Is there nerve damage? Thank you

From your description the line that concerns you is not likely nerve damage from your Botox treatment.  The effects of Botox are temporary and typically wear off over three to four months.  Botox is not typically used beneath the eyes.  You can consider fillers to help improve the appearance.  See an expert injector to learn more.

You may want to see an eye doctor or an oculoplastic surgeon for a consult to determine the cause of the eye bag.You may try skin tightening lasers around the eyes to see if you get any improvement before those consults as well. The bags in question are present under both eyes, but your left eye is worse, which is not unusual as we all have asymmetry. Effects of botox typically wear off between 3-6 months.

Botox needs to be used very carefully in the lower eyelid. It’s better avoided in those who show protrusion of lower eyelid, fat pads. The tension of the orbiculus ocular muscle helps hold periorbital septum back and weakness of the muscle allows the septum to bulge forward making lower eyelid pads look worse.What’s your provider treating? Wrinkles in your lower eyelid?Most experienced providers should know better than to treat the muscle in this area. If I do, it’s usually right at the lash line.The Botox should wear off in three months. It may take a little time for the muscle to regain its normal strength and tension. It looks like all six fat pads are bulging to some degree so this may simply be facial aging that’s catching up.Best,Mats Hagstrom MD
