I’m due to have breast implants on may 12. I’ve had surgeries before. What I’m worried about is that I think I may have sleep apnea. Would I still be able to have surgery if i have it . Thanks

Answer: Thanks for your question... Sleep apnea is an important diagnosis to clarify, and can often leave patients tired during the day. The proper evaluation of sleep apnea would be with a family doctor or internist who may end up referring you to a sleep specialist and ultimately obtaining a sleep study where you are monitored overnight in a sleep lab, after which proper treatment recommendations can be made. Severe sleep apnea is treated with a CPAP mask which forces higher pressure oxygen into your lungs while sleeping. Breast augmentation is a relatively safe procedure usually performed under general anesthesia and usually with a rapid recovery and return to relatively normal (non-strenuous) activity almost immediately. However, after undergoing any Surgeyr under general anesthesia it is important to have an adult with you the first post-operative evening to make sure you are stable, breathing well, and feeling well. I recommend you discuss your concerns with your plastic surgeon, and possibly be evaluated by the anesthesiologist who will administer anesthesia during your surgery. Best of luck to you.

Answer: BA candidate Dear Luminous9504, it is hard to tell for sure without an examination. Generally speaking, sleep apnea is not a contraindication for breast augmentation. If you are considering surgery, I would suggest you consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination, you will get more information and recommendations.
