Is it possible to do a chemical peel on the bikini area that with help lighten the blemishes or is that too harsh?

I am a healthy 19 year old woman w/ dark skin. For many years I have suffered from folliculitis & ingrown hairs on my bikini area which has left my bikini area extremely scarred. Is it possible to do a chemical peel on the bikini area that with help lighten the blemishes or is that too harsh? Is laser treatment the only option? I'm hoping to find something that is a fast and effective method of help scarring.

Chemical peels are excellent for the bikini area. We often use these in addition to daily application of Melarase creams to reduce pigmentation and spots related to folliculitis. Best, Dr. Karamanoukian

The face gets better with chemical peels because of stem cells present in the face.  The density of these stem cells is much, much lower in other areas of the body.  For this reason, other areas of the body tend to scar rather than heal with an improved texture.  I would recommend laser hair removal for this area to prevent future folliculitis.  See a board certified dermatologist who offers permanent hair removal.

While chemical peels do very well to treat hyper-pigmentation, the area around your bikini line would not react the same as the freckles on your face. I would recommend meeting with an experienced clinician to discuss laser options (including laser hair removal) to reduce future ingrown hairs, and pigment irregularities.After a chemical peel, it is very important to keep the area moist until the outer layer of skin has regenerated. Watch for evidence of infection and cold sores as these can cause scarring if not treated appropriately.
