Is the tear trough procedure still okay to be done if I'm on antibiotics for a UTI?

Dear Diligent,Dermal fillers are foreign bodies injected into the skin. In my practice I ask that my patients have completed a course of antibiotics 2 weeks before dermal fillers are used. Theoretically there is an increased risk of the filler site being infected (because there are potential seedlings of microbes in the circulation) within a few weeks of injection. Recent infection is also associated with late onset nodules and biofilms in the skin even months down the line. Tear troughs are delicate areas and have a huge impact on your facial appearance, I would do my utmost to give your procedure the best chance of being a successful without any complications.I would hope your medical injector will advise and guide you on this.Good luck with your procedure,Dr Maeve K

I do not see any problem with you proceeding with your tear trough filler while on nitrofurantoin. I would not advise you to have the procedure if you have ongoing symptoms such as fever or chills from your urinary tract infection. In addition, it is important that you inform your provider that you are currently being treated for a UTI with nitrofurantoin.
