I am a coffee lover and drink about 5- 7 cups week. When I have my annual mammogram the technician always tells me that the discomfort I am experiencing is partly due to dense breast tissue that is seen in women who consume coffee and caffeine regularly. How does caffeine effect implant surgery and should I stop all together prior and/or after surgery.

Answer: Fibrocystic disease, caffeine and breast implants
There may be an association with fibrocystic disease and caffeine but this should not effect breast augmentation surgery as long as you are a good candidate for the procedure

Answer: Effects of coffee on breast tissue are controversial
From the literature that I have read, the jury is still out as to whether caffeine or other similar agents, such as the methylxanthine, theobromine (literally "bromide [food] of the gods" - what an appropriate name for the stuff in chocolate!) have any effect on breast tissue. As you are probably aware, there has been some evidence that benign breast changes, including fibrocystic change, are associated with caffeine intake, but there are just as many studies calling this association into question. I think it is probably like all things: there may be some people for whom this association exists, and others for whom it doesn't. In addition, these types of things are very often dose dependent, thus, more moderate intake of xanthines like caffeine or theobromine can be well tolerated, whereas greater amounts may lead to the symptoms that we are discussing. If you have discovered an association between your own breasts and your intake of caffeine containing foods or drinks like coffee, tea, sodas, and the like, then you may wish to take this into consideration and alter your dietary practices if you get breast augmentation. In any event, I don't see drinking one cup of Joe per day, as you are doing, as a big problem. At the worst, you may experience some increased firmness and soreness in some areas of your breasts if you do have any of these issues, and you can adjust your caffeine intake accordingly. It certainly won't cause lasting disease, or cancer, because those studies are actually pretty conclusive. So, I would tell you that if you are committed to undergoing breast augmentation go for it, and don't be afraid to show them off while ordering that vente Americano or latte at Starbuck's!
