Im 2 weeks out of breast lift and augment surgery and would like to use the gel strips but they cost cash! i was wondering if i could buy one large sheet and cut it to suit my scars so i can save on money?? thankyou

Silicone sheeting has been shown to be benificial is achieving the best result for a scar when used after surgery. The silicone sheets are available from chemists but larger sheets are available from medical wholesalers.

	By all means if you can find a larger sheet, cut it into the correct sized pieces and use that. Remember though that the silicone can be re used day after day so yuo should not need all that much

Thank you for your question.  Breast incisions can be managed using a multimodal approach:1)  Scar massage - starting as soon as the surgical dressings come off and the incisions are sealed2)  Silicone sheets or scar gels for about six months to year3)  Embrace - a tension reducing dressing for the first 2 months4)  Fractionated lasers to help blend the scar into the background - done as a series, starting about 4 weeks after surgery and repeated every four weeks for six months.5)  Sunscreen to prevent the scars from darkeningThe main role for silicone sheets is to keep the incisions hydrated during the remodelling phase of the scar maturation.  This allows the underlying cells to work in a more optimized fashion.  The brand is less important but compliance usually follows ease of use.  Silicone usually has less skin irritation concerns with use compared to adhesives.  They can also be re-used.  I also recommend that patients buy the largest silicone sheets they can find and cut it to an appropriate size.

YES, but if your scars are not bad, why even waste the money on 'preventing' scarring when in all likelihood, it will be minimal to non-existent. Augmentation scars heal quite nicely and if you have a horrible one, you could have a revision and then use the silicone strips from the start to prevent what you experienced the first time around.

Absolutely. You can also wash the sheets and reuse them.

	You may notice that after each wash the adhesive may not work, but don't fret the silcone is still active. 

	You can use ordinary tape on top of the sheets to keep them in place.

Yes, you may cut the silicone sheet to use it on all your incisions. You might even cut it to have a few extra pieces, just in case you loose one.

I usually encourage our patients to cut and re-use(wash gently with soap and warm water and then pat dry before re-using). This way you get many weeks use, and you maximise your value

Silicone sheeting has been used for 25-30 years to improve burn scars and can be beneficial for improving all surgical scars. You certainly can cur large silicone sheets into smaller pieces for economical reasons.
