I was not prescribed an antibiotic after my breast augmentation, is this normal?

You probably got a dose of an antibiotic through your IV prior to surgery which is usually sufficient.  Also, studies show that the incidence of infection with breast implant surgery is extremely low, with or without an antibiotic.  I am one of those doctors who gives patients antibiotics following breast augmentation surgery but it is probably more precautionary than anything.  I wouldn't worry about it.

In scientifically legitimate studies there does not appear to be any benefit by giving antibiotics to breast augmentation patients in uncomplicated situation. Most plastic surgeons do administer antibiotics, at least at the time of the operation, without any scientific justification.

Usually, most surgeons will give their patients an antibiotic through the IV.  Studies have shown that the most important factor in preventing infection is to have the antibiotic in your blood stream prior to the incision.  In all likelihood, you received your antibiotic at this time.  If you have any questions or concerns, ask your surgeon; however, if you're doing well, just enjoy your recover.  Good luck!

More than likely you got a dose of antibiotics 30 minutes or so prior to your surgery.  Although I generally give my patients a 5 days course of oral antibiotics after surgery there is no proof that it is beneficial or prevents an infection.  

There is no need for antibiotics AFTER breast augmentation in most cases. The most important dose is given just BEFORE surgery in the IV. 

Although most surgeons give some amount of antibiotics postoperatively, there is no conclusive scientific evidence to support this practice, and in fact, some authors argue against it because they feel as though the widespread use of antibiotics creates resistant strains of bacteria.  Thus, if your surgeon did not give you antibiotics after surgery there is a very strong likelihood that you will do every bit as well as you would have had you been given them!  Furthermore, most anesthesiologists give a loading dose of intravenous antibiotics in the operating room upon induction of anesthesia, and in principle, if not reality, this is sufficient to kill any bacteria introduced with the surgery.  Most of us who do give a prophylactic course of antibiotics don't give a "full course" (typically a full course is a week) anyhow; rather we will give anywhere from 24 hours to 3 days, but rarely do I see a full week of prophylactic antibiotics for uncomplicated elective surgery.  If there is an established infection that is another matter, but it doesn't seem as though we are talking about that here.  So, in short, I don't think you have anything to worry about at this point.  I can't say for sure that you won't get a wound infection, but I can say that if you do, it most likely would have happened anyway whether you got antibiotics from your surgeon or not.  Good luck.

Congratulations on having undergone the breast augmentation procedure. No, you do not have reason for concern. My practice has also changed; postoperative antibiotics have not thought been found to be necessary and are  therefore not utilized.

You may have had intravenous antibiotics at the start of your breast augmentation surgery, but studies do not demonstrate any benefit of giving antibiotics after the first few hours post-op.  If you are still doing well, you certainly don't have anything to worry about.

The use of antibiotics one hour prior to augmentation is well accecpted, but the use of antibiotics post-op is more controversial.  I give a single dose of antibiotic before surgery and do not use post-op antibiotics.  To my knowledge, I have never had an infected implant following augmentation.
