Will these red spots ever permanently go away?

Hi, I've had some pretty bad cyctic acne on my face and now I'm left with red marks or spots. I hear that people say it will fade overtime but what I've notice is mine has faded but as soon as i get some irration all those red spots suddenly apear again. My question is with it permanently ever go away those red spots?

Accutane is a go-to medication for patients with recalcitrant cystic acne. It can reduce pore size and also reduce sebum production in your skin, making it less oily; and in turn, dryer. Accutane can be used to control acne, but patients receiving the medication should be carefully monitored. In terms of skincare, always wear an appropriate sunscreen and reduce direct sun exposure. In my patients, I recommend a good ceramide moisturizer such as Elevase whenever they are on Accutane. This will keep the skin hydrated and reduce the oiliness of the skin that is associated with oil-based moisturizers.

Thank you for your question. The pigment changes you're experiencing from acne flare-ups will fade with time, but any new breakouts can result in additional hyperpigmentation. There are different options to help speed up the fading process. I recommend different chemical peels, lightening agents and lasers to my patients depending upon their individual skin needs and expectations. Before investing in any of these options you'll want to get your acne completely under control. It would be a waste of time and money to address the redness only to have another acne flare-up ruin your result. Best, Dr. McCune
