Irritating scalp when using Minoxidil, how to fix it?

29 year old male had my 2nd transplant in Nov 2015, my 1st transplant was in Nov 2013. After my 1st transplant, I started using Minoxidil 5% and was all good, the scalp was fine and it was good until but after 6 months it started irritating the scalp and caused a thick white coat on the scalp resulting in hair loss. I immediately stopped Rogaine used Nizoral to treat it. I miss using Rogaine, tried Rogaine foam same result, any idea how i can start using minoxidil without hurting the scalp?

Rogaine can cause itching in certain people. There is a component, PPG, that is found in the liquid form that is a known allergen. If you are using the liquid form I would switch to the foam version and avoid using excessive quantities. If you are noticing patchy hair I would contact your hair loss specialist and discontinue use until you are assessed ASAP given risk of hair loss with discontinuation.  Wish you the best

If you have an irritation or a reaction to a drug (such as Rogaine) you need to inform your doctor.  It may means you have an adverse reaction and you should not use it.  Please follow up with your doctor.

I would recommend decreasing the application to once a day or every other day.The other option would be to try the 2% solution.If irritation persists I would stop it altogether.If symptoms have not resolved at that point I would consult a Dermatologist.Finasteride (oral) is also another option.

One of the complications of minoxidil is irritation. When that happens, it generally says that you should not use it. Check with your doctor
