Should I have drains after liposuction? 4 days post-op.

Thank you for your question. After liposuction there's usually a significant amount of drainage through the incisions. That drainage is extra fluid that was injected into the fat at the beginning of the surgery and remained after the procedure. A siginificant amount of this fluid will be resorbed by the body and the rest will drain throuh the incision site.  A drain can be used for a few days in certain areas to help with the drainage. You should always address your concerns to your specific surgeon and follow his or her advice. Drainage of excess fluids is normal after a liposuction, usually two to three days post-op. It’s quite puzzling why you didn’t have drains in your stomach right after liposuction, as this can help prevent excess fluid from being absorbed in your tissues, thus reducing swelling.
If you’re feeling extra bloated and swollen, make sure that you consult a reputable and board-certified plastic surgeon to evaluate your condition physically. For the meantime, continue using compression garments to decrease swelling and make sure that you limit your sodium intake so that your body doesn’t’ retain extra fluid.
