filler? is there a more permeant option? im not sure why they just appeared in the last few years. Is there anything I can do to smooth out the skin on my chin?

Thank you for your question and for including photos. I believe that a filler would help you add a little volume to this area and fill out the dimple. A consultation would be needed to determine which filler is best for you, but I prefer Juvederm.

A hyaluronic acid based filler like Restylane Refyne or Restylane Defyne will improve this area.

This is a condition created by the space between two muscles during contraction.  My preference would be a simple filler in this area. I would not try to "hit a home run" the first time, just a small amount of a filler.  See how you like it in a week and then go back for more if you desire to do so.

For dimples of various types, botox and/or filler can be quite helpful usually. I like to use a graduated approach, always trying for the simplest approach first. Surgery for this area will undoubtedly cause scar tissue to form and unfortunately, there is no way to predict for sure how that will turn out.  For patients in the office with dimples such as this around the lower mouth and chin area, I generally like to start with botox first, and then see if filler is needed.  If you decide to do botox or filler for these, make sure to see a certified facial plastic surgeon or general plastic surgeon that specialized in the face, as these areas can be difficult to treat well.
